Lest you think I take everything as a joke, time for serious introspection.
Today is Ash Wednesday. It marks the beginning of Lent in the litugical calendar and is a day of fasting for Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59, and abstinence for Catholics above age 14. On a fast day, Only 1 complete meal is allowed the entire day. Abstinence is abstaining from meat and poultry (fish is excluded.)
The purpose behind fasting and abstinence is self-denial. Self-denial increases will-power because it must be done conciously. Food is used because it is the lowest common denominator, and hunger is an immediate feeling rather than a long-term effect. The idea behind Lent is to make yourself more mindful of how you act towards yourself and others. It is a time of reflection and repentence.
Ultimately human beings have only one life on this earth. Our bodies are from dust and unto dust they shall return. Only the soul remains after death.
